Aspiring swimmers, cyclists and runners can now sign up to participate in the third-annual Mesa Sprint Triathlon scheduled for this coming October.

The event, which is scheduled for Oct. 12, is the shortest of the triathlon options and has participants swim 400 yards, bike for 12 miles and run a 5k. People can opt for a shorter challenge by either signing up for a duathlon or running just the 5k, and kids ages 12 and under can participate in the Kids Splash & Dash event consisting of a 200-yard swim and a one-mile run.

Everyone who participates receives a dry-fit race shirt, and the top three in each age group and in each category receives a medal.

The event is sponsored by the foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation; a non-profit organization that offers area youth recreational programs operated by the city.

“Without the Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation and fundraisers like Mesa Sprint Triathlon, we wouldn’t be able to assist families who need that extra support,” said Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Director Marc Heirshberg in a press release. “We feel that every child should have the opportunity to play and learn with us.”

The cost to participate is $60 for individuals and $65 for relay teams, and groups of three or more receive a $5 discount. The 5k is $20, while the Kids Splash & Dash is $15, although all costs increase after Sept. 10.

The event will be held at the Skyline Aquatic Center, which is located at 845 S. Crimson Road in Mesa. Visit to register or to learn more about the event.
