A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of crashing into a Mesa police patrol cruiser, injuring one of two officers inside, then fleeing the scene.

Derek Lee Washington was arrested on suspicion of felony flight from pursuing law enforcement, felony endangerment and drug-related offenses after crashing into a cruiser carrying officers Patrick Kreuzer and Daniel Schoenhardt, according to Mesa police.

Washington crashed into the cruiser in the 200 block of South Alma School Road as officers were pursuing him after responding to a disturbance involving Washington, police said.

Schoenhardt suffered cuts to his left knee and leg. Washington, who was believed to be impaired by alcohol, was treated and released from Banner Desert Hospital, a police report stated. Kreuzer was uninjured.
