Authorities say a suspect has been taken to the hospital after being involved in a shooting with Mesa police.
Steven Berry, spokesman for the Mesa Police Department, said the shooting happened at a strip mall near McKellips and Stapley Drive Monday evening.
Berry said officers responded to reports of someone in the back of a closed business with a "long weapon."
Authorities said when police confronted the suspect, he fired his weapon. According to Berry, one or two of the officers fired at the suspect, hitting him.
There are only two businesses in the mostly vacant strip mall-a healthcare facility and a bank.
Police say the suspect was in the back parking lot behind the buildings and there's no sign he entered either.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what he was doing there and why he had a gun.
Berry said all of the officers are okay and the suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
