Alan Hatch of Mesa learned so much from the first two Leadership Centre neighborhood conferences, he jumped on board to help plan this year’s event.
As president of his Robson Street Villas Homeowners Association, the conference opened his eyes, changed the way his HOA does business and made him more aware of what an HOA should do on a day-to-day basis.
"There were professionals there that you could talk to," Hatch said. "It was a great place to ask questions and get answers. I couldn’t believe how much I learned and couldn’t wait for the next one."
His neighborhood even received a Spirit of Mesa award for community and events building.
This year’s two-day conference is planned for Friday and Saturday at the Chandler Center for the Arts. The Leadership Centre, a partnership between several East Valley communities and educational institutions, is hosting the third annual conference.
The conference will kick off with a neighborhood block party to coincide with this year’s theme, "Mobilizing Our Community." The block party will provide an opportunity to network, eat and get resources, said Stefanie Garcia, a neighborhood outreach coordinator for Mesa.
"Hopefully they’ll walk away with valuable information about how to organize and mobilize people to achieve goals of their neighborhood," Garcia said.
The conference is open to anyone who is involved in their neighborhood and community, from homebuilders and real estate agents, to neighborhood leaders and government officials.
An HOA legislation panel Saturday will discuss various HOA issues and laws. Speakers and panels will follow to talk about bringing people together, how to build those relationships and how to get things done, said Cynthia Dunham, the Leadership Centre’s founder.
"It will be a great opportunity to learn from people who have actually done it," said Dunham, a Gilbert resident. "These are folks who have mobilized their community, from cleaning up crime in their neighborhood to creating sports programs for youth."
