Two men were killed Tuesday in Mesa during what police believe is a drug-related crime. The men in their early 20s were killed about 5:40 p.m. at the Dobson Village apartments, 901 S. Dobson Road, Unit 1041, police said.
Their names were withheld pending notification of family.
“Upon patrol officers entering the apartment, there was marijuana in plain view,” said Mesa detective Tim Gaffney. “Initial indicators are that this homicide is drug-related.”
Police said a witness told officers he was walking through the apartment complex parking lot when two men asked if they could come inside his apartment. The man told police he agreed, then went into his bedroom and closed the door. A verbal dispute broke out among a group of men, then four gunshots were fired, the man told police.
“He looks out into his living room and sees two unknown men shot, and the two he just met are running through the parking lot,” Gaffney said.
The men possibly drove in a dark-colored SUV with tinted windows.
The witness told police he had never seen the two men before, but he wouldn’t tell them why he allowed them in his apartment, police said. The case remains under investigation.
