More than $724,000 has been contributed so far to the Mesa United Way's 2011-2012 pledge campaign, but the agency's Community Chest fund is not attracting as much in contributions. Donors are able to designate which fund they want their money to go toward. The Community Chest fund is the principal financial resource the United Way uses to provide annual financial operating allocations to social service agencies.
Resource development director Linda Haskell said the Community Chest fund is seeing lower donations because many people who have given to the fund in the past are not able to give as much now.
"Those that are working are finding themselves assisting family members who are not," Haskell said. "We continue to hear of folks who have historically supported United Way who are now finding themselves in the position of needing help from the agencies/programs we support."
The pledge campaign started on July 1 and ends June 30, 2012. To help, visit www.mesaunitedway.org/give or call (480) 969-8601.
