Kids 8 to 15 have a new place in Mesa to hang out after school or on Saturdays. The Red Mountain Multigenerational Center has opened a youth activity room for pre-teens and teens to enjoy billiards, foosball, music, movies and interactive games. Also, the center has age-appropriate games on Wii and Xbox systems.

The city's parks and recreation department opened the center to provide a safe place for children to stay busy while parents are working out at the gym or taking a recreation class. A city employee supervises the center. The room is open 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, visit mesaaz.gov/parksrec/RMMC.

So city's park and rec opened an after school youth center at RM Multigenerational Center while parents are working out or taking a recreation class? And the city park and rec cannot pay a staff to keep Washington Activity Center open while parents are working two jobs to make ends meet? Remarkable and Discriminatory!!!!

I am thrilled that the children in Red Mountain will have access to afterschool programs and would love to see more available throughout our city. However, I certainly hope this decision was not made at the expense of the children and families who use the Washington Activitiy Center.
