Authorities are searching for a 25-year-old convicted felon who allegedly assaulted a DPS officer on New Year's Day. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

According to a DPS press release, Rafael Reyna III, 25, "has a history of violence towards law enforcement" and is wanted for allegedly assaulting an officer after he was pulled over along the US 60 near Extension Road in Mesa for suspicion of driver under the influence.

Reyna was pulled over around 2:45 a.m. on New Year's Day.

As Reyna was being arrested by the DPS officer, the suspect turned around and hit the officer numerous times in the face and then fled the scene in his vehicle, according to a press release.

Reyna fled the scene in his vehicle with one handcuff still on his left wrist, said DPS. The suspect's vehicle has since been recovered.

The DPS officer was transported to a local hospital and has since been released to continue recovering at home, said DPS.

Reyna is described as 5 foot, 7 inches, 200 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He has many tattoos, including some on his face, according to a press release. Officials are offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to Reyna's arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the Arizona Department of Public Safety at 602-223-2212 or Silent Witness at 480-948-6377 or silentwitness.org.
