The Mesa United Way officially kicked off its 2012-2013 campaign Wednesday with a goal of raising $2.825 million to fund agencies that serve the community’s most vulnerable residents in need.

Mesa Mayor Scott Smith told the crowd at the campaign luncheon held at the Hilton East Phoenix Mesa hotel that the social services agencies funded by the United Way have a legacy of not only serving the local community, but also those beyond the city’s borders.

The people who work and volunteer for agencies such as Sunshine Acres children’s home, Helen’s Hope Chest, and United Food Bank are just a few examples Smith noted of those who “have made a huge difference.”

“Thank heavens we have an army of people like that in our community,” Smith said.

The mayor urged attendees to give to the campaign and to urge their friends and co-workers to do the same.

“This is a great cause because it builds a great community,” he said.

Also during the luncheon, emergency medical services provider Rural Metro was honored with the Mesa United Way’s Spirit of Mesa Award, given to a person or business that “exemplifies a spirit of selflessness and community betterment.”
