The 24th El Tour de Mesa event featured the setting of one record and the utter destruction of a course record by almost 30 riders.
A press release sent by the organization states approximately 1,554 riders participated in the annual 70-mile cycling race that took riders to and fro downtown Mesa. The annual event featured two constants in repeat victories by 36-year-old Scottsdale resident Craig Streit, who won the men's contest for the fourth year in a row, and 35-year-old Mesa resident Kimberly Johnson defended her women's title and won the race for the third time.
What made this year unique was the fall of Streit's former course record of 2:43:48., which 27 riders broke through on the day. Streit's squeaked by silver-medalist Kyle Reedy by approximately a tenth of a second to keep the course record and earn the repeat victory.
