A police commander in Mesa will serve as interim police chief in Maricopa.
Cmdr. Steven Stahl will take over in Maricopa when current Chief Patrick Melvin retires on Oct. 28.
Stahl is filling the job under a temporary reassignment from his job in Mesa. The two cities have a professional services agreement.
Stahl has overseen Mesa’s crime lab, jail, patrol districts, special operations, gang unit and SWAT team. He is currently in charge of the department’s human resources division.
His appointment was announced by Maricopa City Manager Brenda Fischer on Thursday.
