'Discovering Desert Edibles Walk'

Learn how people have been able to survive in the desert for thousands of years. Find out the secrets of desert plants, including which ones are edible, when and how they can be eaten, and much more. This ranger-guided hike will follow the Merkle Trail8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday at Usery Mountain Regional Park, 3939 N. Usery Pass Road.

Dia de Los Muertos festival

This celebration of departed loved ones will include a wide variety of activities such as live music, artistic demonstrations and more. Events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St. Free. (480) 644-6500 or www.mesaartscenter.com.

Halloween-themed improv

The National Comedy Theatre presents an improvised comedy show based on audience suggestions with a focus on Halloween. Two teams of comedians will compete to see who can generate more laughs. There will be two shows, 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, at the National Comedy Theatre, 1111 S. Longmore Road, Mesa. Kate Voegele performance

In addition to her musical work, this young singer-songwriter has also appeared on the television show "One Tree Hill." She's currently touring in support of her most recent album, "A Fine Mess."

'Wallacepalooza'

The Mesa Main Library, 64 E. First St., will hold a costume contest and celebration of all things "Wallace & Ladmo" 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Memorabilia from the show will be on display, and episodes of the longtime local children's show will be screened.

Lunchtime concert

'All About Tarantulas' lecture

Learn about these large desert spiders at this educational discussion. How do tarantulas survive in the desert? When and where can you find them? How dangerous are they to humans? Bring a lunch and learn the answers to all of these questions and more from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Usery Mountain Regional Park, 3939 N. Usery Pass Road.

Children's stage show

MC Cat will take kids on a journey around the world, telling stories about the most famous felines in history during "Puss in Boots and Other Cat Tales." Children of all ages will be delighted by these tales from cultures all around the globe.

The show is scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St. Tickets cost $15, $14 for youths.

Dance lessons

If you're looking to improve your dance moves, Shall We Dance Phoenix and the Stars Ballroom, 2848 S. Carriage Lane, have teamed up to present "Dancing Under the Stars" from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday.

For $10, this event will feature personal instruction from professional dance instructors in the fox trot and East Coast Swing. No partner is necessary to take part.
