People who plan to participate in Mesa’s annual Make a Difference Day on Oct. 26 are eligible to receive small grants for their service.

Coordinated as part of National Make a Difference Day, the event is meant to encourage locals to engage in their community through civic service projects. At least 1,500 people are scheduled to participate in 50 projects that include painting walls and curb numbers; cleaning up parks, alleys and canals; and distributing fire and recycling information.

Mesa participants also have an opportunity to receive mini grants to aid in their projects. The grants feature a gift card worth up to $100 to purchase materials or two free landfill passes to dispose of debris from the project.

Applicants can receive a grant by meeting certain criteria established by the city. Those criteria cover having at least five people participating in the service project; a need for material like tools to complete the project; a clearly defined geographic area within Mesa for the project; and have limited access or no access to additional funding sources.

The deadline to submit grant applications is Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m., and information about the application is available by visiting http://evtnow.com/5vi. Volunteers can contact City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Program Assistant Andrea Arenas at andrea.arenas@mesaaz.gov or by calling (480) 644-5034 as well.
