Mesa is holding an emergency preparedness event on Sept. 26 to help families know what to do should disaster strike.
The event features educational seminars on family preparedness, CPR, first aid, flu pandemic planning and making sure your pets are ready for disaster. There will be heavy equipment such as firetrucks, helicopters, a hazmat unit and mass decontamination equipment. The event includes family entertainment, free prizes and McGruff the Crime Dog.
Participants can also take part in a blood drive. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.givelife.org.
The event is part of National Preparedness Month, which was created in the aftermath of the Sept, 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina to help citizens be more prepared for emergencies.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mesa Riverview's Bass Pro Shops, 1133 N. Dobson Road. It includes a noon flag-raising ceremony followed by speeches from several officials.
