A 47-year-old man Mesa police sought to detain for mental health reasons on Sunday morning was arrested on suspicion of trying to abduct a 14-year-old girl.
The girl told police she was riding her bike and looking for her dog in the area of Summer Street and Lynwood about 11 a.m. Sunday before the man approached her, asked her to show him her chest and told her to get in his truck, according to detective Steve Berry.
The girl said she was vaguely aware of who the man was, and the investigation led to a man who was the subject of a mental health detainer call on an unrelated matter.
The man claimed his actions were only to teach the girl about potential dangers. He was transported by police to urgent psychiatric care for a mental evaluation.
