Stargazing with experts

Join experts Tony and Carole La Conte and explore the wonders of the nighttime sky via an outdoor slideshow. The program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Usery Mountain Regional Park, 3939 N. Usery Pass Road.

Learn about the stars, constellations and planets. Telescopes will be available to help you put your newfound knowledge to use. Don't forget to bring chairs or blankets to sit on.

The program is free, but there is a $6 park entry fee per vehicle.

'Second Friday' in downtown Mesa

Businesses in downtown Mesa will stay open late to celebrate the monthly "Second Friday" event. This month's theme is "Dog Days of Summer," meaning downtown will be transformed into a pooch-friendly area. Activities will include dog-friendly games, contests, adoption centers, live music, raffles and more. The festivities will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Mesa, 58 W. Main St.

Tennis center offering free lessons

The Gene Autry Tennis Center, 4125 E. McKellips Road, is offering free tennis lessons to adults and children 8 and up. The classes will be offered in two sessions, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, beginning Monday through Aug. 20. The youth session will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the adult session will meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tennis racquets and balls will be provided for participants. Registration is required and spots are limited.

Get up early for morning fitness hike

For those early risers looking for some exercise, this is for you. Come take part in a three-mile group hike along mostly level trails at 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Usery Mountain Regional Park, 3939 N. Usery Pass Road.

Improv comedy performance

The National Comedy Theatre presents an improvised comedy show based on audience suggestions. Two teams of comedians will compete to see who can generate more laughs from the audience. There will be two shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. at the National Comedy Theatre, 1111 S. Longmore Road, Mesa. Admission is $10 to $12. 'My Favorite Monster' exhibit

The Arizona Museum for Youth takes a lighthearted look at monsters created by a variety of artists. Kids can explore a monster's castle, star in a monster movie and even make a monster of their own.
