Students from the East Valley were among those honored Thursday for their writing in the 2013 Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest.

The contest was sponsored by The Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) and APS.

This year, Arizona students submitted entries exploring the topic, “What is My Commitment to Civic Engagement?”

In the seventh- and eighth-grade category, first and second place were awarded to Megan Riley and Jane Wang of Chandler's Santan Junior High School. Third place went to Mesa Taylor Junior High School's Cameron Jones. Taylor Junior High Students Johnna Watson and Riley Pageau were awarded honorable mentions.

In the ninth- and 10th-grade category, the top three winners were all from Scottsdale's Chaparral High School: Betsie Dries, Arshan Barzani and Maxwell Bartlett.

In the 11th- and 12th-grade category, Faith Yi of Chandler's Hamilton High School won first place.

The students were recognized by Secretary of State Ken Bennett and Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal during the statehood Day Ceremony at the Capitol.
