The City of Mesa Solid Waste Management Department and East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) recently partnered to give students on-the-job training in steel fabrication by repairing trash containers. The students repaired approximately 24 front-load trash bins during the program that lasted the length of the 2011-12 school year.

“This project not only allows students to fine-tune their welding skills and work as a team, it gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment seeing the finished product and earning money for their program,” EVIT Superintendent Sally Downey said in a news release.

As part of the program, Mesa’s Solid Waste Management Department will donate a $1,000 scholarship to the school, allowing EVIT to help students needing financial assistance with program fees and safety equipment purchases.
