Fire officials say three people, including an infant, were taken to the hospital after a light rail accident in Mesa Tuesday night.

Mesa Fire Captain Forrest Smith said just after 6 p.m., a car struck a light rail train near Main Street and Sycamore Drive.

Smith said the 24-year-old male driver of the car suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Officials said a 23-year-old female passenger also suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Authorities said an infant in the car was secured in a car seat and suffered no obvious injuries. The baby was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by Mesa police.

Smith said the light rail train was parked, unoccupied and out of service at the time of the collision.
