Mesa is changing how it thinks about zoning land in its downtown, and it’s holding meetings to share its new approach and to get comments from residents.
The new form-based code is different from traditional zoning, which separates different land uses and tends to make the public more dependent on automobiles.
Form-based codes focus on the physical form of a building, not just what kind of use the building is intended for. The approach is intended to create walkable urban places.
The form-based code will be presented in an open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p. m. March 20 at Mesa City Plaza, 20 E. Main St.
The proposal is then expected to be presented to the Mesa Planning and Zoning Board on April 18 and to go to the City Council in May or June.
