A Mesa man and two women were arrested on suspicion of auto theft after police spotted them walking through a neighborhood close to where they left the vehicles on Monday.
Matthew Saunders, 24, and two women whose names were not available were arrested about 5 a.m. near the 800 block of East Seventh Place after a neighbor spotted the two women getting out of a white minivan near her driveway. One of the suspects also is accused of stealing a GMC Yukon out of a driveway in the 1500 block of East Dolphin Avenue near Gilbert and Broadway roads.
Police located the vehicles in the 800 block of East Seventh Place after a man on Dolphin reported the vehicle stolen when he left its engine running while he ran back inside his house to get some water, according to police.
Officers spotted the Yukon speeding throughout Mesa, but after losing sight of it were able to locate both the stolen vehicles and arrest the suspects after police drove through a neighborhood and first spotted Saunders carrying a can full of gasoline he had planned to put in the vehicles.
