A Mesa mother accused of child abuse has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 21-year-old Jessica Allyson Martinez was sentenced Friday on a misdemeanor count.

She was arrested on Dec. 20 after her 2-year-son was found on the balcony of her apartment in 40-degree weather wearing only a diaper.

Police were dispatched to Martinez's apartment to perform a welfare check after receiving calls from neighbors about the child on the balcony.

The boy opened the front door of the apartment for police officers, who say the child was wearing only a soiled diaper and appeared dirty and unbathed.

Martinez was four miles away at the time. She told police she left the boy alone to drop off money and her car to her boyfriend.
