The Mesa Police Department has arrested a man for allegedly assaulting two officers outside of a grocery store on Aug. 18.

A press release from the department states the suspect, who the department did not identify, allegedly punched a female officer in the face and punched a male officer in the side of the head as they tried to arrest him at a Food City store located at 450 E. Southern Ave. The suspect is alleged to have refused to pay for food he ate and to have stolen a bag and placed it outside the store prior to the officers’ arrival. The officers proceeded to engage in a physical fight with the suspect, during which the suspect’s blood made contact with their skin before he was taken into custody.

The two officers and the suspect received minor bruises and abrasions from the fight, and the suspect faces two counts of aggravated assault on officers, theft and shoplifting charges.
