A Valley resident who was named United Nations Humanitarian of the Year in 2009 will appear at a March 31 lecture in Mesa that includes the screening of a movie about her.

Rose Mapendo was featured in "Pushing the Elephant," which tells of Mapendo being imprisoned and tortured after the Rwandan army invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1998. Mapendo's husband was executed, and she went on to deliver twin boys on a concrete prison floor before being released. Mapendo now lives in Phoenix and has become a global activist for peace and reconciliation.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St. To reserve a seat at the free event, call (480) 644-3705 or e-mail katie.brown@mesaaz.gov.
