The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has announced an ozone health watch for Thursday, according to a news release.

An ozone health watch is issued when ozone levels approach federal health standards. A health pollution advisory is issued when ozone levels are expected to rise above those federal standards.

Ozone is an invisible gas created when the sun heats other pollutants in the air. It can aggravate existing health conditions such as asthma.

The ADEQ recommends drivers avoid long drive-thru lines to help cut down on pollution and that drivers fuel vehicles after dark or during cooler evening hours.

Ozone creation is at its peak in the early evening. The elderly, as well as the very young or those who are ill, should limit time outdoors.
