More patients visited NextCare Urgent Cares for sunburns in 2010 than in 2009, according to recent patient data released by the company.
Most of the sunburn visits - 1,362 - came from Western states (Arizona, Colorado and Texas), while only half that many (736) came from eastern states (Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia).
The numbers represent a 32 percent increase in of sunburn visits from the west region year-over-year, and a 23 percent increase in the east region for the same time period.
Dr. Howard Podolsky, chief medical officer for NextCare, says everyone, regardless of geography, should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the peak sun hours of the late morning through early afternoon. Also, constant hydration is essential; the average person requires eight or nine glasses of water each day to replace normal fluid loss — and can double depending on the amount of sun and heat exposure the individual encounters.
