The Town of Gilbert officially reopened an improved section of Williams Field Road between Gilbert Road and the Eastern Canal.

Workers widened the road to six lanes, installed new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, street lamps, retention basins, storm drains and landscaping.

The project, which cost $5.9 million, took less than two years and also included a 700-foot-long equestrian path along the north side of the road. The costs were paid for by an intergovernmental agreement between Maricopa County and Gilbert, both of which share jurisdiction of the road. The two agencies shared all costs equally for design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation and construction.
