A Fletcher’s Tire and Auto Service location in Gilbert will have to repay the State of Arizona more than $28,000 after it was caught breaking state fraud laws during an auto repair sting operation.

According to a press release sent by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, the complaint filed by the state began in March when an undercover agent dropped off a vehicle in need of minor repairs at the Fletcher’s located at 1535 N. Burk Street. The shop manager, however, told the consumer the inner seal of the vehicle’s compressor was leaking even though there was not a diagnostic test performed to indicate a leak.

The manager recommended a replacement for the non-defective compressor that ended up costing approximately $860, and the shop also charged the consumer for warranties for three supplemental parts without his consent for a total of $60.

The sting resulted in a recent Consent Judgment stating Fletcher’s violated the state’s consumer fraud act and will pay the state $20,000 in civil penalties and $8,256.63 in costs, attorney’s fees and restitution. Fletcher’s also agreed to create a secret shopping program to monitor and prevent those practices and report them to the Attorney General’s Office periodically.
