The Town of Gilbert is one of 30 finalists nationwide - and the only municipality on list - for the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. The finalists were chosen from 4,049 nominations by Guard and Reserve service members or their families.
The award honors employers for formal and informal measures they put in place to accommodate employees serving in the military. Such initiatives may include making up the difference between military and civilian pay during deployments, continuing a service person's benefits, or sending care packages to families when their loved ones are deployed.
Fifteen of the 30 finalists will receive the 2011 Freedom Award, to be announced in early summer.
