The Gilbert Police Department has begun registration for this spring's 2010 Citizens' Police Academy. Classes are 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 10 through April 28 at the Gilbert Police Department, 75 E. Civic Center Drive.

Topics include the K9 unit, tactical operations, police ethics, patrol operations and criminal investigations, as well as a firearms orientation and safety overview.

Upon completion, all participants receive a Certificate of Graduation and are invited to join the Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association. Alumni attend special lectures and training to aid the police.

The academy is free, with space limited to about 30 students. Potential candidates must be at least 18, live or work in Gilbert, have no prior felony arrests and have no misdemeanor arrests in the past five years.
