Six Gilbert Unified School District junior highs recently received $2,500 checks from the Friends of the Southeast Regional and Perry Branch libraries. The funds will be used to purchase new books and supplies and replace those beyond repair.

Desert Ridge, Gilbert, Greenfield, Highland, Mesquite, and South Valley junior highs were each asked to submit a letter to the Friends board and make their case for how they would use the donation, according to board member Diane Owens.

According to the district, the challenging budgets of the past years have resulted in limited funding for library books and textbooks, making it difficult to replace in-demand titles, which are often "loved to death." The Friends board, which has made donations to Gilbert elementary schools in the past, chose to benefit junior high students because they lack the ability to drive to a public library or bookstore on their own.
