Girl, 12, stable after brother, 10, accidentally shoots her in Gilbert

A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his 12-year-old sister with a handgun, according to Gilbert police.

Shortly after 8:30 Tuesday morning, Gilbert police officers were called regarding a shooting victim at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. 

According to a release distributed by Gilbert Sgt. Bill Balafas, the girl was transported by air to Phoenix Children's Hospital in stable condition.

According to KTAR.com, Balafas said the children's fatherl is an Apache Junction police officer who was off-duty at the time of the incident. KTAR is reporting that the shooting occurred outside Higley Elementary and Middle School in Gilbert. 

The investigation is ongoing, but police are treating the incident as an accident.
