Mayor John Lewis dropped the first doggie bag into eTURD, the dog waste digester at Cosmo Dog Park, in Gilbert Saturday.

The project is designed to help residents to clean up dog waste, reduce the amount of garbage in landfills, as well as a way to teach students about science.

The digester was designed by Arizona State University students and uses aerobic bacterial digestion to breakdown the waste to gas. Park visitors can deposit dog waste into eTURD and a lamp post will produce a flame.

Cosmo Dog Park is located in Gilbert at 2025 E. Ray Road, near Ray and Greenfield roads.
