Gilbert police say they've released a man who fatally shot another driver after a roadside confrontation.
Mitchell Fickes was pronounced dead at a hospital after the Saturday evening shooting. The 56-year-old had apparently gotten out of his truck with a gun and was approaching a pickup driven by a 23-year-old man when that man got out and opened fire.
Police said Sunday it appeared the unidentified 23-year-old acted in self-defense and he was released after questioning. The Maricopa County Attorney will review the case.

Sad, sad thing that this happened in Gilbert. I hope we find out the whole story. But, can anyone explain why deceased was taken to Scottsdale Osborne hospital? What is that, maybe 20 miles away. Gilbert Mercy is just down a the street, maybe one mile. Banner Gateway is at US60 and Higley, may 7 miles away. Then there's another hospital on Power. So why go so far away? Any explanations?

Ya that is odd. Maybe the guy was so obviously dead that time didn't matter and they took him to that place for another reason. I'm sure we will learn more as the story develops.

Scottsdale Osborn is a Level 1 trauma center. GSW's and violent trauma victims will receive the required care at this type of hospital.

Just 2 more " hot headed truck drivers" who think that they own the road.

@ mesa teacher.. Banner Gateway, Banner Baywood, and Mercy Gilbert are not equipped to treat this type of injury.. Scottsdale Osborne is a level 1 trauma center and has the facilities and staff trained to handle this. Also, a friend of mine was on the scene and tried to help the victim. He was not breathing and bleeding out, if the hospital was across the street he still would not have made it. He was fatally shot.. Sad that he could not control his road rage....

Who knows what happened...witnesses at the scene give accounts, but we haven't heard from anyone witnessing the incidents on the road that created the situation at the intersection. At the end of the day, the Mr. Tough Guy attitude of the guy getting out of his truck with his gun didn't work out so well.

ya he wont go to jail right now but trust me hell get sentenced for negligent homicide and either have to pay millions to the family or hell serve jail time at some time.remember the road rage incident in mesa on valentines day four years ago (said person) was not charged immediately but down the road was same thing there it was "self defense" i have personal conections to that case and this ne smells familiar
