A woman and two police officers were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after coming in contact with an unknown substance.

Gilbert Fire Department spokesman Brian Ruffentine said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. near Higley and Ray Roads.

Ruffentine said a woman called police after finding a suspicious package in her mailbox.

When officers arrived, the homeowner told authorities the package was a small box with an oily substance and strange odor. She told police after handling the package, she started feeling sick.

The woman, and two officers who also touched the package, were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Ruffentine said crews do not believe the package contained hazardous materials and could be full of cell phone accessories.

Authorities took the package to a state lab for confirmation.
