It’s the season of giving, and Gilbert leaders gave thanks earlier this month for the efforts of someone who — you guessed it — has given plenty to her community.

Dr. Eva DeCozio-Bush, DVM, of Panacea Animal Wellness Sanctuary (PAWS) was honored at the Dec. 6 Gilbert Town Council meeting with the town’s 2012 “Spirit of Giving” award. DeCozio Bush was also honored at the 12k’s of Christmas Dec. 15, with the award sponsored by Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

According to a press release, the Spirit of Giving “recognizes volunteers in the community who give their time and resources to help animals. Dr. DeCozio-Bush is the epitome of the ‘Spirit of Giving’ when it comes to our four-legged friends. Her passion for animals has become her life’s work and the two are inseparably intertwined.” For more information on PAWS, visit www.pawsaz.org.

“In February 2012, Dr. DeCozio-Bush and the PAWS organization spearheaded the very successful “Valen’Tails: Adopt a Pound Dog Weekend” event held in Tempe with the goal of having a no-kill weekend. Dr. DeCozio-Bush orchestrated free of charge spay and neuters for almost all of the dogs rescued from the various pounds throughout the valley. Over two days, over 150 dogs were adopted,” the press release added.

“Not only does Dr. DeCozio-Bush fight for animal’s lives on the operating table, she also fights for their lives in court, testifying as an expert witness and providing forensic evidence in animal abuse cases.

“Over the years, Dr. DeCozio-Bush has personally provided a forever home for over 50 cats and dogs. She currently has 14 dogs, 8 cats and 4 horses - all rescues. Dr. DeCozio-Bush donates thousands of dollars for food for the animals and has donated tens of thousands of dollars in medical care.”
