Social for newcomers

The town of Gilbert is teaming with the Congress of Neighborhoods to help welcome new residents. This is the perfect chance for those new to the area to socialize while learning about the many opportunities and services provided by Gilbert. Attendees will also receive a kit filled with handy information.

The social will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Road.

Coyotes offer deal for Gilbert residents

Gilbert residents are invited to bring their family and friends out to see the Phoenix Coyotes play at Jobing.com Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave., Glendale, on Jan. 30 for Gilbert Community Night.

The Gilbert Fire Department has partnered with the Coyotes to offer special discounted tickets for the game against the New York Rangers. Lower-level seats are $40 and upper-level seats cost $20.

'Beau Jest' stage show

The Hale Centre Theatre will present the comedic 'Beau Jest' play by James Sherman through Feb. 13.

To fool her parents, Sarah Goldman hires an actor to pose as her boyfriend. Can he keep up the charade under pressure from all sides?

The theater is located at 50 W. Page Ave. Ticket prices are $17 for matinees and $19 for evening shows.

Knitting and crochet club

The Common Threads, a knitting and crochet club, will meet 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Newsstand Room at the Perry Branch Library, 965 E. Queen Creek Road. All ages and ability levels are welcome to come and share projects, food and friendship.

Explore the Riparian Preserve

An interpretive ranger-led tour of the 110-acre Riparian Preserve, 2757 E. Guadalupe Road, will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Monday. A $3 donation is requested to take the tour.

The preserve's numerous plants will be on display during the desert gardening and garden tour programs at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Saturday. These allow participants to work in and learn about the habitat gardens in the preserve with plant biologist Jennie Rambo.

Hear about how the preserve maintains a healthy and diverse environment. Learn how you can use similar techniques in your own home garden.

Recreational classes available

Looking to get the kids out of the house? Interested in picking up a new skill?

Registration is open for the winter session of Gilbert recreational classes. Take a look at the wide variety of activities offered by the town at the Freestone Recreation Center, 1141 E. Guadalupe Road.

Dance, sports, education, fitness and martial arts are just a few of the courses offered. Registration fees and starting dates vary.
