The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will hold a public hearing 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the possibility of a formal recess policy as required by state law.

The administration recommends the district maintain its current unstructured time for recess.

According to a notice on the district's website: "It is our belief that it is important to a student's development to have some time during the school day that is unstructured, so that students can use their own creativity to design and decide upon what activities they will be involved. Gilbert Public Schools provides sports fields and playgrounds where students can create their own activities, such as playing soccer or playing on swings and monkey bars."

Districts can, by law, decide whether or not to have a structured recess. The meeting will be held at the district's offices, 140 S. Gilbert Road.

How much money will it take to decide if children can play for a while during the school day? I find it difficult to believe that this is an issue. There certainly is nothing more important for these monkeys to discuss and argue about, is there? I'm going to go and throw up now.

Most good school districts ask their lawyer to look over their policies, make recommendations to the Board, form a committee of Board members and parents, and come up with appropriate new or revised policies. Is there a reason Gilbert has not done this?
