Trial begins in Gilbert woman's death

Trial is set to get begin Tuesday against a Mesa man accused of killing a 19-year-old Gilbert woman in 2007.

KTVK-TV reports opening statements are expected in Maricopa County Superior Court against 29-year-old Jonathan Burns.

Prosecutors allege Burns shot Jackie Hartman on their first date on Jan. 28, 2007.

It was a nearly month before police found the Hartman’s body buried in the desert near Fountain Hills.

Burns has maintained his innocence since police arrested him. He did admit having sex with Hartman but claims he dropped her off to meet her family.

Hartman’s torn clothing was found in a trash bin near Burns’ home.

Burns is charged with first-degree murder, sexual assault, kidnapping and weapons misconduct.
