Four months after receiving permission to complete the deal, the town of Gilbert finished its sale of the 6-year-old Polar Ice facility to new owners AZ ICE.
Per a press statement, the town announced its agreement to sell the rink to AZ ICE, which owns rinks in Peoria and Arcadia, four months after the Gilbert Town Council approved the agreement. Along with the sale is a name change from Polar Ice to AZ ICE Gilbert.
Gilbert acquired control of the rink via receivership after original owner Spiral Inc. fell into default and lost control of that rink as well as rinks in Chandler and Peoria. Chandler’s rink was purchased by Coyotes Ice LLC and had its name changed to Ice Den Chandler.
AZ Ice owner Jim Rogers said Gilbert owns the land, but said his company has taken over management of the facility in a deal that cost more than $4 million.
“There’s a demand for ice in Phoenix and Arizona, and Gilbert has a wonderful facility,” he said.
Adding the Gilbert rink to its collection offers Rogers’ company coverage in the north and southeast Valley and central Phoenix, which he said is part of a plan to take advantage of the aforementioned ice demand. The goal is to turn the three facilities into elite training centers for both hockey and ice skating, both of which he said are growing in popularity in Arizona. A step he mentioned the organization could take is to establish a strong youth hockey program he said could potentially compete with one hosted by the Coyotes.
But he added the facility will require multiple upgrades to serve that purpose, citing the compressor and lights as examples. Other projects could include a paint job and a revamp of the facility’s café to expand its serving options.
“We’re putting our plan together,” he said.
Rogers said an early estimate of $30,000 will not cover all of the proposed repairs, but he said AZ ICE will determine the amount based on the potential return on investment for investors.
As part of the sale, AZ ICE Gilbert will host a grand opening for the facility on May 17. The event will include bounce houses, snow, carnival games, food and other amenities and activities between 1 and 3 p.m. Visitors can also stay and skate for $5 between 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
