Butch Smiley will be at tonight’s Town Council meeting, wearing a T-shirt he made to advocate that the town finally paint “Gilbert” on its water tower, months after the Redevelopment Commission voted in May to move forward with the painting of the town’s name.

However, Smiley opted not to bring a petition with signatures that he had planned to collect Saturday, and instead will push for the town to move forward with the approved plans as a way to support downtown.

He issued an apology Monday to “all of those who showed up Saturday at the Gilbert library to sign the petition to have the town name painted on the water tower.”
