A group of animal lovers who lost their pets say they are now trying to "turn tragedy into triumph."

Members of the Gilbert 23 are busy getting ready for an adoption and rescue event this weekend.

Organizers say they've been able to raise $13,000 through a Gofundme campaign. Money the group says they'll be using to rescue 40 dogs from Maricopa County Animal Control.

The dogs will then get their own parade and a special grooming before being turned over to various rescue groups for adoption.

Gilbert 23 was formed by pet owners whose dogs died after being boarded at Green Acre Kennels in Gilbert.

The owners of the kennel say the dogs died after one animal chewed through an electrical wire and cut power to the building's air conditioning.

Findings from a search warrant and a vet's assessment don't wholly support that claim though. In the search warrant Maricopa County investigators say the dogs didn't have enough space or medical care. A veterinarian also found no evidence that a dog was electrocuted.

Maricopa County sheriffs investigators are still going over the case. No charges have been filed. A civil lawsuit has been filed against the owners of the kennel.

The pet parade and adoption is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at 2500 South 27th Ave. in Phoenix.
