A home was destroyed as fire crews narrowly escaped from its collapsing roof early Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the fire at the home about 4 a.m. in the 2300 block of Saratoga Street near Greenfield and Warner roads, and went into a defensive strategy to prevent the fire from spreading, according to Mike Connor, a Gilbert fire spokesman.

After fire crews discovered two vehicles in the garage, where it appears the fire began, they went inside the home in search of occupants, but weren’t aware that the a couple made it outside of the house.

A dollar amount on the damage was not available and the investigation into the cause continues.
