Gilbert residents are invited to bring their family and friends out to see the Phoenix Coyotes play at Jobing.com Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave., Glendale, on Jan. 30 for Gilbert Community Night.

The Gilbert Fire Department has partnered with the Coyotes to offer special discounted tickets for the game against the New York Rangers. Lower-level seats are $40 and upper-level seats cost $20.

Holiday lights

Get into the seasonal spirit and check out the holiday lights display through Jan. 8 at Power Ranch, 4444 E. Haven Crest Drive. Thousands of lights will be strung on the community’s three 30-foot-tall windmills, buildings, trees and monuments.

Explore the Riparian Preserve

The Riparian Preserve, 2757 E. Guadalupe Road, serves as an urban oasis for wildlife in Gilbert. Learn more about the 110-acre park on this interpretive ranger-led tour at 8:30 a.m. Monday. A $3 donation is requested for taking the tour.

Library story time

Local libraries offer story time programs for young children to help them develop a love of books and reading from an early age. The Perry Branch Library, 1965 E. Queen Creek Road, will hold a pre-kindergarten session from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and one for families with children 4 to 7 from 6 p.m. to 6:40 p.m., both on Tuesday.

There will be a “Wiggle Worms” event for children 18 months to 3 years old featuring age-appropriate stories, music and rhymes.

'A Christmas Carol’

Don’t miss out on the last few days of this holiday stage production. The Hale Centre Theatre will present the well-known tale by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol,” through Wednesday.

This story of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey to discovering the true meaning of Christmas is a classic.

The theater is located at 50 W. Page Ave. Ticket prices are $22 for matinees and $24 for evening shows.

Recreational classes available

Looking to get the kids out of the house? Interested in picking up a new skill?

Registration is open for the winter session of Gilbert recreational classes. Take a look at the wide variety of activities offered by the town at the Freestone Recreation Center, 1141 E. Guadalupe Road.

Chess education

Open chess instruction will be available for students of all skill levels from kindergarten through high school. Classes will meet 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mathnasium, 538 S. Gilbert Road, and will cost $20 per class or $60 a month.
