Former State Senator David Schapira has been appointed assistant superintendent at Mesa’s East Valley Institute of Technology.

Schapira’s appointment was approved Monday by the EVIT governing board. In his new role, Schapira, who had been working as a consultant to EVIT’s adult education programs, will be assisting with the management of EVIT’s Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) campus, 1601 W. Main St., and East Campus, 6625 S. Power Road.

EVIT Superintendent Sally Downey said Schapira is key to EVIT’s efforts to expand programs and partnerships.

“He has tons of energy, passion and a real belief in what EVIT stands for,” Downey said. “He knows the politics of Arizona, and he’s an educator. He’ll bring a wealth of knowledge to EVIT.”

Schapira is the former Arizona Senate Minority Leader. He has represented Tempe and South Scottsdale in both the House and Senate over the last six years. A third-generation Arizonan who was born in west Mesa, Schapira served as a high school teacher, an instructor at Arizona State University, a member of the Tempe Union High School District governing board and a small business owner.
