Chandler Unified School District enrollment is up nearly 940 students this year, far more than the 700-student increase projected.

Classes began July 22 in the district - which uses a modified year-round calendar. On the 10th day of classes, there were 41,199 students. The 10th-day enrollment is reported to the state by all public schools.

In 2012 on the 10th day, there were 40,259 students in Chandler's schools. That was up from 2011 when there were 39,498 students.

Enrollment increases are across the board, said district spokesman Terry Locke. More than 3,000 kindergartners started at the schools in July.

"Our kindergarten enrollment, just over 3,000, was higher than anticipated given that births were down five years ago at our local hospitals," he said in an email.

Chandler did not open any new schools this year.

School started this week in Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe districts.
