School receives$10K lunch grant

Kathryn Sue Simonton Elementary School in the J.O. Combs Unified School District is the recipient of a Love Your Veggies Nationwide School Lunch Campaign grant, sponsored by the makers of Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressings, in collaboration with the School Nutrition Foundation and Produce for Better Health Foundation.

The $10,000 nutrition grant will help pay for increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables for students during school meals and promote good eating habits.

Simonton Elementary School was the only school in Arizona to receive the funding. The winning grant proposals were chosen based on need, innovation, greatest likelihood of sustainable impact on the students they are serving and potential for community involvement, according to the company.

Food services supervisor Michelle Swendseid and grants/special projects coordinator Keith Johnson wrote the grant proposal.

Swendseid also wrote and received a second $10,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Education for the "Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program."

School briefs are printed every Sunday. To submit an item, e-mail the pertinent information to hringle@evtrib.com at least a week before the event. For more information, call Hayley Ringle at (480) 898-6301.
