From puppet theater to African drum performances, you can't beat the Maricopa County Library District's Summer Reading Program for youth that begins Thursday.

Programs and with prizes as reading incentives will be hosted at 17 district libraries and 12 affiliate libraries. Each library has scheduled its own list of events, such as origami, musicals and animal encounters.

Participants are encouraged and rewarded for reading during the nine-week, four-level program. Those who complete the fourth level can earn their own free book. In addition, other prizes are being offered by Arizona SeaLife Aquarium, Del Taco, Musical Instrument Museum, Marriott Courtyard Scottsdale, Marriott Springhill Suites Scottsdale and the Phoenix Mercury.
