Shirley Miles, the outgoing superintendent of the Tempe Union High School District, has been chosen to lead schools at military bases in the United States and around the world.

Miles, who has led the Tempe district since 2004, has been named associate director of education and principal deputy director for the Department of Defense Education Activity.

The department directs education programs for children whose parents are employed by the Department of Defense in areas around the world. It educates both military and civilian children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Miles is familiar with military communities, as her father was in the U.S. Army and she has “led the military life,” which the selection committee said gave her an edge over the competition.

She will oversee educational programs in more than 200 schools.
