School briefs: Q.C. district board to meet Tuesday

The Queen Creek Unified School District Governing Board will meet Tuesday at the district office, 20740 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek.

Board members will hear a presentation on AIMS testing results during the 4:30 p.m. public study session.

At the 6 p.m. meeting, the board will give employee of the month presentations, discuss a catering contract with Chicanos Por La Causa, and begin talks about the timeline for the superintendent search. Superintendent James Murlless said he will retire from the district in June 2011.

Williams Field hosts Curriculum Night

Williams Field High School will host a Curriculum Night from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 2076 S. Higley Road, Gilbert.

Parents are invited to tour the campus, meet their child’s teachers, and visit their child’s classes. Parents should bring their child’s schedule.

Parents of freshmen are invited to an informational meeting regarding the high school experience from 7:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the auditorium.

Elementary school schedules dedication

Centennial Elementary School will host a dedication at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 3507 S. Ranch House Parkway, Gilbert.

There will be a ribbon cutting. Gilbert Mayor John Lewis, retired Arizona Cardinals cornerback Jay Taylor and Superintendent Denise Birdwell will speak in the gym, followed by a reception in the cafeteria.

The school opened this month in the Higley Unified School District.

Higley High plans Curriculum Night

Higley High School will host a Curriculum Night from 6:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school, 4068 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert.

Parents are invited to visit classrooms, meet teachers and learn more about the school’s curriculum.

Parents will follow their students’ schedules for short presentations in each classroom. Student schedules will be available in the courtyard before 6:30 p.m.

Parents of freshmen should meet at 6 p.m. in the library for a short presentation by the school’s administrative team.

Cross-country team to host run/walk

The Higley High School girls cross-country team will host its third annual Beat the Heat “Knight” 5K Run/Walk at 7 p.m. Friday around the high school track, 4068 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert.

Gilbert district to hold Vendor Expo

The Gilbert Unified School District Volunteer Network will host its first Vendor Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Highland High School, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert.

Interested parents and volunteers, including members from booster clubs, parent-teacher organizations and the Parent Superintendent Council, are invited to the expo for a day of networking, training and meeting vendors.

Classes will be offered on finances, fundraising, boosting morale, recruiting and maintaining volunteers, running meetings and setting agendas, and effectively marketing events.

There will be more than 50 local businesses at the expo offering opportunities for fundraising.

Centennial needs aide, crossing guards

Centennial Elementary School is hiring for a lunch aide as well as crossing guards. Centennial opened this month in the Higley Unified School District.

Intelli-School to hold open house

Intelli-School Charter High School will host an open house for current and prospective students and their families from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the school, 1727 N. Arizona Ave., Suite 5, Chandler.

Families can tour the school, talk with current students and staff, and eat popcorn and snow cones. Intelli-School offers a computer-driven, self-paced learning environment for students ages 14 to 21. It is a tuition-free public school that offers daily morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Chandler Traditional slates flag ceremony

Riggs PTO to meet Wednesday

Parent-teacher conferences at Bogle

GED classes at Rio Salado

Rio Salado College will host “Super Registration” Aug. 24-25 for students to sign up for classes to prepare them for the GED (General Education Development) test. The college’s classes are funded by the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Education Division. They are free for participants. Registration is still under way for Mesa Unified School District’s tuition-based prekindergarten program. Classes begin Aug. 31. Children should be 3 1/2 years old by Sept. 1, but there may be some flexibility. All sites offer one, two-hour session with the option of going three or four days a week. Cowan schedules community meeting

Michael Cowan, Mesa Unified School District’s new superintendent, will hold a community meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district’s board room, 549 N. Stapley Drive, Mesa. It is the first meeting of the year for Mesa Parent Advocates for Quality Schools. Parents and residents are welcome. Parent meeting to cover sex education

Mesa Unified School District parents can learn more about Project MESA: Mesa’s Education in Sexual Awareness during a meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kino Junior High School, 848 N. Horne, Mesa. Teachers will present a curriculum overview and open the floor for questions. The program offers four lessons to both seventh- and ninth-graders on the physiological and psychological aspects of human sexuality.

A.T. Still celebrates commencement

A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences celebrated commencement ceremonies Aug. 8 at the Phoenix Convention Center, where 471 students received degrees. Graduates received degrees in human movement, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, audiology, physical therapy and athletic training. It was the largest graduation ceremony for the school, which was founded in 1995.

New Samaritan gets new management

The New Samaritan High School, 1455 S. Stapley Drive in Mesa, is under new management. Career Success High Schools is running the program and offers six high school programs Valleywide.
